Job Title: Behavioral Health Medical Assistant & Primary Care Triage Medical Assistant  (BH MA & PC Triage MA)

Reports To: Kara McKenna, Ancillary Services Manager

Summary: This is a hybrid position which is responsible for assisting the behavioral health providers in the delivery of healthcare and patient care management and also providing triage for primary care patients.

CPH Paid Education Program Available:  Tuition paid MA certification program in partnership with TCR (Technical College of the Rockies).  Receive your RMA in 18 weeks while working for Cedar Point Health and earning internship credits.  Program start dates are rolling throughout the year and available to Medical Assistant(MA) & Clinical Aide (CA) employees upon approval of supervisor.

Responsibilities

BH MA responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  •  Conduct pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating patient electronic medical record prior to appointment and confer with provider regarding incomplete tests/consults or other orders.

  • Prepare patients for examination and treatment by escorting them from the waiting area to the providers room and taking needed vitals, heights and weights.

  •  Prepare, clean, and maintain the provider rooms. Keeps exam rooms stocked with supplies.

  •  Gives injections, assists with EKG’s and other tests and office procedures as needed. Provide other patient care services as directed by the providers.

  •  Maintains medication records, administers medication upon physician order and responds to medication requests per practice protocol via (fax, phone and e-script).

  • Triage, schedule same day appointments, and respond to patient communication within practice policy for BH and PC.

  •  Assist providers with patient education and self- management for BH and PC.

Triage responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Answer incoming patient calls related to acute or chronic medical concerns.

  • Use triage protocols to assess symptoms and determine appropriate care recommendations.

  • Assess symptoms, determine urgency, provide guidance, and routing concerns appropriately to providers.

  • Provide trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support to patients.

  • Assist with crisis management under the guidance of licensed staff

  • Maintain courteous relationships with outside caregivers, insurance carriers, labs, hospital, and pharmacies at all times.

  • Document triage interactions in the electronic health record (EHR) accurately and promptly.

  • Escalate calls to the appropriate provider or care team member when needed.

  • Provide patient education related to common conditions, medication use, or appointment preparation.

Job requirements

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.

  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments

  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions

  • Skilled in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member with physicians and other staff

  • Ability to assist in a variety of common office procedures

  •   Ability to maintain records and record test results.

  •   Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures

  • Ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time

  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds

  • Willing to cover at different locations

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Must be experienced in a physician’s office or equivalent combination of training and experience. Behavioral Health experience is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements: Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting.  This position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Must be able to use a variety of office equipment.  May require working under stressful conditions.

Conditions: Normal office and exam room environment. The position requires the ability to work under pressure and with a diverse population, including staff, physicians, clients, patients, insurance companies, labs, hospitals and other members of the public on a regular basis. The position may cause exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
